JPG images getting saved as JFIF? - Fix for Windows 10 – JPG Files Download as JFIF

Sometimes Windows 10 saves JPG files as JFIF files. It seems to happen most often when saving images in browsers but doesn’t seem to be limited to them. The cause of the issue is an incorrect file association in the registry which appeared after the Windows 10 Creators update. This can be a hassle for those of us using programs that will not accept that format!

What is a JFIF file anyway? It’s the JPEG File Interchange Format. It seems to have been around since the early 1990’s, which proves once again there’s always something new to learn about computers.

The Fix

The fix is to edit the registry of Windows 10 and change the image association type. BUT….that can be dangerous for those who are not experienced, so I wrote a simple .reg file that will do it for you. Of course, it’s still wise to backup your reg file before using this, but it does work well.

Basically, we are changing the following entry in the Windows reg file. If your comfortable making changes in the registry, here’s the path:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > MIME > Database > Content Type > image/jpeg > Extension > Modify > Edit string > change Value data to .jpg

To make this even easier, just download my jpgNOTjfif.reg file here, pace it on the desktop, double click on it and accept the changes. That’s it! Now when you try to download a file and it has a jfif extension, it will download as a jpg instead.

Recently I came across an annoying issue whenever I tried saving a .jpg file from the web. It always ended up getting saved as .jfif. JFIF is an image format for exchanging JPEG encoded files. JFIF files should open normally in all popular image editors and if it doesn’t, you can always rename files from .jfif to .jpg. The reason this has started happening is because of Windows 10 Creators Update. I am not sure what was Microsoft thinking that saving all .jpg files in a non-standard format is the way to go. Anyway, there is a simple registry fix for that.

Follow this method only if you are comfortable with editing the Windows Registry. If you are not then skip to the end of this post where I have a simpler method that would still edit your registry but it will be done in a safe way.

Launch Registry Editor using Windows Search

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > MIME > Database > Content Type > image/jpeg

In the right panel, double click on the Extension key. Its value should read as .jfif.

Change the value to .jpg and click Okay.

Close the Registry Editor.

The change should be instant and you should now be able to save JPG files from the web in .jpg format as it should be.

The Safe Way

So you are not comfortable editing the Windows Registry yourself. Good choice. To apply the fix in a safe way, download the file below and save it someplace safe on your PC. Double click on the file in the explorer and accept the changes. That’s it. You should now be able to save files as .jpg again.

I am hoping Microsoft will fix this bug in the future unless it was intentional in which case it is stupid.
